Pipe fitters are individuals who are skilled in the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, including piping, fittings, fixtures, equipment and appliances. Piping is the means of transporting products, fluids, gases or slurries.

A pipe is usually cylindrical in shape, made from metal or plastic. A pipe is different from a tube , since a tube is usually only one conducting material. A pipe used to transport gas may also carry liquids or slurries. A pipe can be used to carry an almost limitless variety of liquids, from water to slurries to corrosive fluids. An open pipe is used as a drain.
