Road rollers are used to compact, smooth and level asphalt and concrete in new and existing road surfaces and pavements. A road roller has a rectangular frame, with a hydraulically operated, overlapping pair of rollers. The wheels of the roller are similar to those on a tractor; they are usually fitted with flanged wheels or pneumatic tyres.

Road Rollers can be either self-powered (with mechanical transmission to the rollers) or towed behind a tractor (a “hauling” roller). Most have a rear stand to support the roller when it is not being towed, but some have a front stand.

The driver’s seat is at the rear of the main frame, just in front of the hydraulically operated cylinders that control the rollers.
